The UofS SEG Student Chapter hosted the 2014 Society of Economic Geologists Thayer Lindsley Visiting Lecturer, Dr. Neil Williams at 3 pm on September 2nd, in GEOL 265. The title of his talk was: Giant Carpentarian Lead-Zinc Province of Northern Australia—What Have We Learnt Over the Last 40 Years?
Some of the Student Chapter members visited the Boudary Dam coal mine in Estevan on the 28th of April, 2014.
On Tuesday, February 25th, 2014 at noon in Geology Room 165 the third presentation by alumni of the U of S Department of Geological Sciences regarding career paths and opportunities was held. Our speakers were Shaun Loverin from BHP Billiton, John Shmyr from BFR Copper & Gold Inc. and Matthew Batty from Cameco Corporation.
On the 5th of February (Wednesday), 2014 from 8:45 to 13:00 the University of Saskatchewan SEG Student Chapter Data Management and Geostatistics Workshop was held in Geol 161 at the Department of Geological Sciences. Louis Fourie from North Rim and Bruce Eglington from the U of S gave an introduction to the practical aspects of data management, database structures and statistical analysis, with a focus on applications in mineral exploration.
The program included the following sessions:
1. Introduction and the ‘Big Picture’ - Louis Fourie (30 min)
2. Practical multivariate exploratory data analysis - Bruce Eglington (60 min)
3. Geostatistics for mine planning - Louis Fourie (60 min)
4. Designing your own databases - Bruce Eglington (30 min)
5. 43-101 reporting requirements and closing remarks - Louis Fourie (30 min)
On Thursday, November 7th, 2013 at noon in Geology Room 265 the second presentation by alumni of the U of S Department of Geological Sciences regarding career paths and opportunities was held. Our speaker was Jodi Olchowy, who works with PotashCorp.

On the 26th of April the Student Chapter's graduate student members took part in a visit to the Allan mine of PotashCorp, as part of the University of Saskatchewan Graduate Geological Society Potash Mine Tour.
On the 4th of March the Student Chapter presented a poster at the 2013 Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada Student Colloquium in Toronto. The pdf file of the poster can be downloaded from here:
